Dec 2025; Thoughts from Huw
Dear friends
‘And the word became flesh and lived among us’ (John Ch 1 v14)
Jesus didn’t come to live among the rich, the powerful and the famous. No, he separated himself from society and lost himself in an obscure village. Nazareth was the place of the poor, of the mass of ordinary people. His life was made up of simple things shared by all people. Here is what we see what the incarnation was really about. There is little we can say about our lives that God’s Son could not say when he became man and lived among us.
The Gospels show us Jesus as a healer, teacher and wonder- worker. But these activities lasted only three years. For the rest of his life on earth he worked as a village carpenter. There was nothing spectacular about his work. For the most part it was routine, and no doubt often left him tired and frustrated. He didn’t make benches and tables by means of miracles, but by hammer and the saw. And, as far as we know, nothing he ever made set fashion trends or became collectors items. Yet he did this work faithfully until the day he heard another call.
There is a great lesson for us in all of this. We must not write off any part of our lives as useless, or any experience as a waste. Everything gives us an opportunity to grow. Life calls for a lot of patient waiting. But we must not wait for something great to happen. We must live the present moment to the full. The future is contained in the present. The future will be the blossoming of the present.
Often our daily tasks may seem to be dull and insignificant. But we must not underestimate their importance. Though nothing great may ever happen, a kind of greatness is still open to us. To perform one’s ordinary work well, day in and day out, presents no small challenge.
We must try to appreciate the value of our daily tasks. We can do them with the love and help of Jesus of Nazareth, the word who became flesh and lived among us.
We are approaching another Christmas and we have some beautiful services and events at Wesley to look forward to including - Thanks Giving Tree service, Toy service, Carol Singing, Christingle service, Carol service and a Christmas Day service. All the details are found in the Special Services.
